My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abstract Algebra, Differential equations, and topology. I was especially interested in algebraically-capable computer math programs. I,eventually, went back to school for my Mathematics degree as part of a long-standing interest in and commitment to Mathematics. I presently teach students who are "at risk" in the 7th through 12th grades and have done so for the last 10-11 years at OHM-BOCES. I like to discuss and communicate how various accounting rules and concepts can be rationalized. If one understands the motivation for the rules they can better anticipate how items should be handled and they are more likely to retain information. Simply memorizing facts and rules doesn't serve students well in the long run and that approach is only as good as their ability to recall the proper information at the right time. Even then though, while this may get them through tests and classes, they are not as successful when there is real-world situations that require them to apply their knowledge.
