My first experience as a teacher came in high school when I held a part-time job at a Kumon Math and Reading Center. As an undergraduate student at Columbia University I held several after school tutoring positions, some paid and some volunteer. Upon graduation I decided to join Teach For America. For the past year and a half I have been teaching high school mathematics in rural Hawaii while concurrently pursuing a master of education in teaching degree from the University of Hawaii. I have found that I have a passion for teaching children of all ages. For that reason, I am pursuing a career in teaching. I have taken the Communications and Literacy MTEL and will be taking the Elementary Math MTEL on May 9th of this year. My teaching "style" is process-oriented. I first explain the fundamentals or theory, then do an example, then work through an example with the student, and finally allow the student to complete a problem on their own.
As a high school student, I had a part time job tutoring a younger high school student in mathematics and SAT preparation. This job was 4 nights a week and lasted all during my senior year. As a college student, I would frequently help friends and family with high school chemsitry in a one-on-one formal setting. I also further tutored my brother's friend in SAT preparation.
