Providing a calm and productive learning environment is my goal for each every student. By holding high expectations for learning, I strive to build confident critical thinkers. Through teacher-student interactions, it is important to guide and direct students by asking questions, exploring options, suggesting alternatives, and encouraging them to develop criteria to make informed choices. I believe that education is the key to success in life. No matter what your social level, getting an eduation is the highway that leads to a better way of life. Education forms the building blocks of a better person. I am a "visual" learner myself, but I understand that there are many methods of teaching, and the goal of a teacher is to find the right method for each student.

My name is Briana and my college major is Elementary Education with endorsements in ESOL and Reading. At the University of West Florida I have maintained a 3.6 GPA and have been on the Dean’s List and the President’s List. This is an important achievement. However, I do not take this to be my greatest asset. It is my belief that my love for children and desire to see them learn, even as I increase my knowledge, is of greater value. During my college career I have made myself available to volunteer outside the classroom. I have worked in schools, science fairs, church schools, and other organizations. In participating in these events I have learned from others by observing and being a part of the educational experience. It is not a duty, but an opportunity.

A Little Bit About Me...

Variety is good! I enjoy working with students of all backgrounds, personalities, and academic levels. I have come to realize that we learn differently. What works with one student may not work for another, so I try to stay as creative, open-minded, and instructionally flexible as possible. I have also realized that most students want to do their best but find it difficult with the distractions and hindrances of everyday life, so I strive to engage students' full attention though a variety of games, activities, and projects. What I love about tutoring (that traditional classroom teaching doesn't always offer) is that I am able to give my students 100% of my attention for the duration of the study period.
Though I graduated with a BS in Secondary English Education, I have tutored and worked with students from elementary to secondary levels. From 2003-2008 I taught English and a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.

In the past, my classes have lasted up to three hours at a time. Thus, I have been forced to implement new methodologies in order to not only keep my students focused and interested, but continually learning as well. I incorporate fun activities such as creative writing and music into my lessons while still closely following the curriculum. I believe that education can be both entertaining and beneficial, just as I believe that all students are capable of reaching new heights of academic excellence. All it takes is a little bit of patience and creativity on both sides, the teacher and the student, to have an unforgettable experience.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching-style is rigorous yet kind. My students say that no one has ever criticized their writing and thought so thoroughly and constructively. I'm known for my patience working with students with foreign-language backgrounds and other disabilities such as a lack of attention and focus. I learned from my professors at Swarthmore College (and a few at Penn) how to project a non-B.S. style, since kids tend to intuitively realize when their teacher has no idea what he/she is talking about. Coming from a family of teachers and professors (who have also been my teachers), I'm confident that good teaching is in my bones. I never use technology just for the sake of using technology.

My perseverance and strong ideas of education importance has led me to recently graduate from the University of West Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree. My plans are to continue my education to become a Physicians Assistant. However, my time in between schools can be at least one year.
