Beginning in high school I found myself driven to help children in need. Through my participation in Mercy Action, I raised money for mentally delayed children, and set up numerous barbeques for them. Later, I began tutoring a young brazilian boy in the 5th grade. He needed help with all of his studies, especially math and english. As a political science major, I have gained experienced in essay writing, grammatical skills and research methods.
Before I was able to tutor, I taught 7 year old girls cheerleading. When I began to tutor, I enjoyed being one on one with the child. I am very patient, punctual and considerate. I know children that need extra help need extra time. I find it personally rewarding to supplament a child's education. I also believe it is easier for a child to ask questions when they are one on one with an educator.

As a teacher of urban students and students who have experienced sever trauma (Hillside), I have gained a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by children today such as home environment and poverty. My teaching style is very structured and includes various modes of instruction. I try to utilize cooperative learning strategies when ever possible. Students can learn alot from each other both intellectually as well as socially. To help students to learn the vast amount of vocabulary included in most science curriculums I teach my students to determine word meanings by braking words down into their latin roots or “decoding”. I also like to teach students important study skills as well as test taking strategies.

I'm very laid back and patient when it comes to teaching. I can empathize with students who have difficulty in a subject because at one point in my educational career I had trouble and needed help. I do believe that almost every one is capable of learning and progressing, given the right opportunity. It makes me feel great to help someone achieve their goals. I'm a personal trainer, which is very similar to tutoring. I love seeing people improve because of my assistance. Many people have helped me get to where I am today and I want to give back to the younger cohort. I'm a leader, I want to lead students in the right direction. It means a lot to me to make a positive difference in this world, and it starts with education of our youth.

I love to teach by arousing the thinking faculty of my students with questions that makes them think in the line of the subject. Use of illustrations, applying the subject being discussed to real life situations, one that students can relate with, is a very handy tool for me and has worked very well over the years. Thorough explanation, an encompassing summary and point tags on core areas of the subject are vital tools in making subject stick to the mind of students.
Teaching is a natural talent for me. I started teaching Mathematics in 2000, just after graduating high school in 1999. I have always enjoyed teaching people in a one-on-one or small group environment. It allows me to tailor my teaching style to fit the individual student or group I’m working with. I enjoy using creative methods to teach a topic, including creating multiple ways to explain a term or concept and providing analogies to concepts that are familiar to the student. All people comprehend concepts in different ways and at varying speeds. Thus as I teach a concept I am constantly looking for signs of understanding, and then stop and reinforce a concept when it is apparent that the student does not understand. Teaching is a very fluid process, one that requires acute understanding of the challenges students face when learning, and an active process that requires energy and intelligence on the part of the teacher, qualities I believe I possess.
I was fortunate to be able to enter college ... read more

Individualization is an important part of my teaching style. I think it is important to identify what the student needs to work on and present it in a way the student can grasp the concept and enjoy learning. The student has to enjoy learning to succeed. I try to present material in such a way that the student will find it interesting and use different techniques to help them remember what they have learned. I also use the pre-teaching/re-teaching strategy. The student doesn't feel overwhelmed with the newly presented material, more confident to participate in class, more willing to ask a question, and is more successful with class work and homework assignments.
