I encourage a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where the student and I can work together to create goals and then decide on the best ways to achieve these goals, including discussing which learning style works best for the student. I encourage students to learn by doing and by thinking. So, rather than give the student a list of rules to memorize, I prefer to give an example of a rule and then have the student interpret the example and implement it in a new situation, afterward reflecting on what they did to see how it helped (or did not help) them learn.
