A Little Bit About Me...

I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. I have been tutoring here since.

I recognize that it is crucial to build rapport with students in order to gain their trust and respect, and as a result, I try to discover my students’ goals and interests. Once a student realizes that I genuinely care about her success, she is more likely to work hard and obey my instructions. In addition, I am a patient individual, which is a useful quality to have when one is having difficulty getting a student to comprehend a particular concept. Furthermore, I make sure to praise my students for their hard work because I know that low confidence can inhibit successful learning.

Florida Writes is an assessment of writing proficiency which incorporates the assessment of higher order skills, since students are required to generate and develop the ideas that form the basis for their written responses. Looking for help? Select a tutor today. Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible.
