People who've seen me teach describe me as relaxed, focused, and funny. For better or worse (I like to think better), I believe in age appropriate humor as part of an overall teaching philosophy. I also tend to be lively. But the bottom line is that we all understand our goals and reach them. When I walk into a classroom or even a solo session, I want to know what the student(s) needs are. I believe in teaching to the goals and then even exceeding them. At the same time, I'm not rigid at all. There are many ways to hit the target. Students come in all shapes, sizes, and moods. I am patient and approachable but insist on the value of completing assignments even if the student "hates" them. I am good at explaining how this will be important later, which turns around reluctant learners. I believe in explaining, showing, modelling, and then stepping back while the student tries, explains, and determines where the mistakes come up. A diverse education at Wesleyan University has prepared me to tutor many high school subjects. I earned my BA at Wesleyan in Music but I almost double majored in Environmental Science. The high expectations of professors at Wesleyan pushed me to greatly improve my writing ability, with my music thesis earning me honors in music. Environmental sciences sharpened my science and mathematic ability. Extensive courses in music prepared me to tutor music students in any background or concentration.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is a combination of serious, in-depth theory and practical examples to demonstrate such theories, all with a hint of humor, followed by significant practice of the newly learned skills. I've been "teaching" people all of my business career. I always start with the underlying theory and immediately segue into a practical example of how the principles work. I think students want to learn, but need the information presented in a way that makes learning interesting, not boring. I have that ability. Education in my life has been my number one motivating factor for success. Throughout my educational career I have always been organized and a group leader when it came to helping my fellow students with projects/homework/studying, etc. For many years I tutored individuals in English, Math, Social Studies/History, German, Psychology and Arts. My experiences have all been validating. Sometimes schools are limited in the amount of extra attention they can give certain students and that is where being a great tutor comes into play.
