UCLA English grad; experience teaching both English and Math

Mine is a creative and lively, interactive teaching style, focusing on playing off of children's interests and strengths. I make it a point to get to know the students I work with -- background, education, hobbies and lifestyle.
I majored in English Literature and Writing at UCLA, with a focus on British Pre-Reformation Classics, as well as Shakespeare's 1st and 2nd portfolios. I also won 1st Place in the university's Westwind Writing Competition, taking home top prize for Non-Fiction entry. I have experience working on the school newspaper, The Daily Bruin, and extensive journalism experience. Finally, I co-founded The Writers' Den, a school-based organization dedicated to teaching English and Writing to inner-city students (Compton, Inglewood especially).

I have worked as a graphic artist for over 20 years and know my stuff quite well. You can see samples of the work I've done on my website at www.koockaskreations.com. I have been teaching children age 6-10 wood working in an after school program for the past 2 years. I was the art director at camp Newman in 2011, and taught Hebrew school from 1982-1987 in LA, and from 2009-2011 in Fresno. I recently started doing videography and would love to help someone...you? with a video project. In addition to helping children with their school projects, like a 3-D map of Egypt, a pop-up book to illustrate a mathematical equation, posters, etc, I have also tutored several children privately to help them prepare for their bar/bat mitzvot. I am easy going and easy to talk to. I have a great repore with children of all ages, and enjoy helping them learn new things.

Learning how to learn is what I teach.

I value curiosity above all else and this is the first thing I try to encourage. No matter how charismatic an instructor is, curiosity is a skill that always survives the instructor, becoming a pre requisite for any academic endeavor the student chooses to pursue in the future.

Between 2012 and 2014 I was a teaching assistant for various courses for upper level undergraduate and graduate seminars in Art, Media, Technology and Culture at California Institute of the Arts. A Little Bit About Me...

I studied Honors Biology, naming seven new species as an undergrad. I took a variety of classes though, giving me a firm background in many subjects and strong international experience. I completed a rigorous year at Uppsala University in Sweden, did collections of rare plants in the Canary Islands, and lived in Morocco learning about medicinal herbs. Since college, I’ve tracked desert tortoises and black bears and served at the Smithsonian Institution. I love getting others excited about learning. I’ve taught Biology to campers, American History to Cubscouts, and Math to a learning disabled child in my old neighborhood. I’m responsible, interesting, easy going, and honest and I think kids respond well to me.
