I have been a tutor before in person and am used to working with young and older kids. As I am currently a Biology Major in Undergrad I believe I am a good fit to tutor anyone younger than me or around my age. I am patient and a good communicator so we have a good chance of becoming friendly which helps when learning or reinforcing new topics and ideas. I am not a qualified teacher yet but I do have experience in leadership situations, such as clubs and organizations, and am currently studying which means I am always willing to learn and help others learn so they can achieve their goals.

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. My experience in diagnosing and instructing students at various stages and abilities of literacy acquisition has helped me garner a talent for overcoming this challenge, and propelling students into higher order thinking.
As an educator, I view myself not as a provider of knowledge, but rather as a facilitator. I aim to encourage the critical thinking that will serve students not only in the classroom, but throughout their lives. In my experience, I have become well-versed in student-centered curriculum develo ... read more

For more than twenty years I have had experience in report writing, creative writing, speech writing, resumes, and projects. My expertise lies not only in the proficient use of the English language but in skills development. I can teach anyone of any age to discover, embellish, and resourcefully utilize even the most obscure of their talents and abilities. For twelve years I coordinated and mentored forensic (public speaking) teams that participated in league competitions. I can teach the art of public speaking and can develop “baby steps” required to inspire confidence in one’s ability to overcome shyness and “terror” when speaking to either a large or small group of people. .
My teaching methods include brainstorming, thought organization, use of the thesaurus, and use of adverb and adjective clauses to overcome writer’s block. These are in part “taught” but also deve ... read more

I am inspired to be a school teacher and educator to give to the community my years of experience. My history as an insurance professional was centered on the consultative approach, providing education and understanding of insurance and offering guidance and advice to families, individuals and businesses on how to protect their financial well being. 30 hours of classroom observations have been completed during the first semester of City College of New York with another 30 hours scheduled for the second semester. My background as a consultant, advisor and trainer for 20 years should prove valuable, transferrable and a fresh perspective to the classroom.

The teaching methods that I plan on using will be challenging yet stimulating. The use of technology, group exercises, oral presentations, and skits will be prevalent. Since every student has his or her own story, teaching styles will be adjusted accordingly to maximize learning potential. If a student can achieve that potential, it will be evident in his or her work and whether or not the lesson can be taught to another student. Use of portfolios will enabled students to see the progression in their learning. Aside from seeing improvements and areas of strength, I want the students to know that their work is extremely valuable and how it can apply to their own lives.

I have written curricula and taught/tutored students of all ages and backgrounds for twenty-five years. As an English high school teacher in Harlem, NYC, I taught students how to write essays, concentrating on the research paper. I have tutored ESL. I have taught verbal SAT prep. I taught computer software and administration (building such departments) for many years at some of the largest international law firms in the world.
I am patient, confident and intent on building confidence. We all have the ability to learn; that some subjects come easier to others has nothing to do with our individual abilities. When teaching essay writing, the most difficulty students have is forming a narrow thesis statement. Their next challenge is to write 3 or 4 statements following their thesis, which is what they will prove in essay form. I use simplicity in approach. I build confidence. I also us ... read more
