In general, I believe that the more I can get the student to talk and ask questions the better. If I'm doing all the talking, then most likely the student is either bored or confused - or both. Also, as much as possible, I try to tailor my methods to the particular student. This can mean speaking in a way that I think is most natural to the student. It can also mean asking the student to explain a problem in his/her own words so that I know he/she is not just parroting the textbook.
