I was offered a fellowship by the Graduate School of City University of New York on the basis of my GRE (chemistry) scores soon after I have completed BS degree in chemistry with physics as the minor at University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. I have earned two masters degrees, MA in Polymer Chemistry and MS in Organic Chemistry, which has enabled me to gain admission to the doctoral program in chemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign where I have fulfilled all requirements for the doctorate in organic chemistry except the writing and defense of the dissertation itself. I love teaching because it provides an opportunity for both teacher and student to learn new things. I also believe that by applying appropriate teaching styles, the most difficult subject can be very easy to the students. I believe in getting students involved in their studies by making it fun. Regardless of the demographics of the student population in the classroom, I have learned that it is as important to listen as it is to present information. I really love teaching and finding different ways of using analogies and similarities to explain difficult concepts. I have been very successful in teaching the sciences and mathematics courses in an understandable way. I believe that everyone is capable of learning the material, it simply needs to be presented in the correct way. Some students are more verbal learners, others are more visual learners. I use plenty of paper to demonstrate ideas and draw diagrams to help make the material more understandable.
