As an undergraduate student I was always in the top ten percentile of my math, chemistry and biology classes, and as a result, I tutored fellow college students in those respective subjects. After earning my bachelor degree in biology, I worked as an educator at the South Carolina Aquarium where I taught interactive classes to kindergarten, middle school and high school students. I also worked for the Leadership Development Program at the College of Charleston where I co-facilitated student leadership classes. I am very much a hands-on instructor. Long ago, I heard the Chinese Proverb “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” These words embody my personal teaching philosophy. I utilize a varied and balanced set of teaching strategies that will meet the needs of all types of learners. First, I determine the student’s preferred learning style (auditory, visual, or kinesthetic) and tailor my lessons accordingly. I then try as much as possible to make our lessons as relatable to the student’s likes and interests. Science can seem to be like a foreign language to the uninitiated, but at its essence science is simply a way of thinking about the world and asking questions.
