I enjoy teaching with individuals of all ages. I believe that every person should learn something new everyday and to succeed in doing this all that is needed is a common link. My patience and determination show to my students that I am there to help them. Coupling this with a view at the big picture helps a teacher better understand which ways a student learns. Since all students do not learn in the same manner it is pertinent to establish a game plan in the first meeting and help them work through any difficulties that they may learning the subject manner. Once your teaching style is on the same page as their learning style, everything should work out in the end. Not only are you a tutor but you should also be a role model.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a college graduate, I started my teaching career in a catholic elementary school. I taught second grade for a year and first grade for two years. It was truely rewarding to see students become fluent readers. I relocated and took a position as a special education assosciate. I worked with four special education teachers. I worked with both groups of students and individuals on their IEP progression. After that I spent 13 years as a fourth grade teacher. I taught all subject areas. Wrote curriculum, served on committees, and belonged to educational organizations.
I truely consider myself a life long learner and hope to instill that in all the students I work with. I enjoy helping students become all that they can. I understand that each student has their own individual learning style and that the teaching has to be adapted for that. I believe hands on experiences are some of the ... read more

My teaching philosophy mirrors my learning philosophy. I believe in using a variety of methods and media to reach students on a level they can understand. One of the best compliments that a teacher/tutor can receive is to hear from a parent that their child loves to learn when he used to resent school. Obtaining my Bachelor of Science degree and Middle School endorsement from Faith Baptist Bible College has given me the ability to help others have a passion for learning. I have the most experience and expertise in reading, but also have experience in cognitive training as well as tutoring in composition, grammar, reading, math, and study skills.
I am a “hands-on” type of teacher who likes to get a lot of senses involved in order to enhance student learning. I generally do some initial direct instruction while explaining a new concept, and then I reinforce and assess understanding by doing group projects or activities. Because of my experience with cognitive training, I am also able to use strategies to help students who struggle with ... read more

The core principle I hold to as an educator is that to be a great teacher I must also be a great student. A willingness to expand one’s knowledge and points of view by interaction with colleagues, students and the professional world which ones teaches about is the best way to insure that students respect you and the information that you give them. If students are taught by a malleable mind, then their minds, too, will be equally flexible. By understanding that all students possess multiple intelligences, and that those intelligences vary from student to student, teachers and tutors should guide instruction towards both the intelligences a student naturally possesses and those that need development. Another successful tool in motivating students is to make sure they know you are there for them beyond your time together and that you take an interest in their entire education.

I believe that every person is able to learn, if they want to. You can't make someone learn if they have no interest in it. I try to establish a reason for learning with the student. My first child I tutored is a perfect example. This boy was 14 years old. He really enjoyed carpentry. He hated math because he didn't realize that it would help him with what he loved. With the relation of math to his carpentry he was able to come from a low "D" to a low "B". It worked becasue he was able to mentally visualize and apply it to his carpentry. I feel the other key to his success is that we set the realistic goal of one letter grade of improvement. The extra letter was the icing on the cake.
As a Junior in college I made the decision to become a teacher. The decision was based on the observation that a majority of teachers are over worked and don't have the time to provide the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Since graduating from college, I have been instructing professionals and employees in safety behavior and safety management processes. I have learned extensive grammatical skills in the military, during my assignment as an inspector on the Inspector General (IG) team. I performed proof reading and report writing for two years. My parents were elementary and algebra teachers. There were numerous occasions I assisted them with correcting tests during my high school years. My best accomplishments have been tutoring my four children in their subjects, primarily math, over the last five years.
I have always been successful at teaching children to understand and believe that they can learn anything from hitting a baseball to doing algebra. Each child learns differently, as I have learned from my own children. Starting slowly and building on the fundamentals will open the child's eye ... read more
