Patient math tutoring

I have a been tutoring math on at least a part-time basis for over 20 years. I have a degree in Psychology and another in Geomatics (Surveying and Mapping - heavy on mathematics) from the University of Florida. I have received a perfect score on the math portion of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination). Let me put that experience to work for you!
I am very patient, but I expect you to work to his or her full ability and to be honest about your weak points. If you can do most of the work on your own and come to me with what you truly have problems with, out time together will be much more productive.

Education is, after bread, the first need of a human being

Teaching and tutoring are two different entities. If the teacher meets a great number of students in a large room, the tutor works one-on-one in a quiet place. As a tutor, here are my methods: >After reviewing my student's syllabus, I work on what needs to be covered from the agenda. >More often than not, students have gaps in their learning. A good way for me to see where they are fumbling is by asking open-ended questions. >I let my students try to figure out the answers. Showing patience and gentle encouragement reduces anxiety and allows the students to be active in the learning process. >I work out examples. Students' minds need association to absorb some information. >I inform my students when the session is almost over. >I recap my session by explaining briefly what was covered. I ask my students how they benefit from the session. >I confirm the next appointment.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that an instructor’s primary role is to create an environment that encourages a real desire to learn by presenting the subject matter in a way that is interesting to the student and by striving to make it make it relevant to their lives. It is my role as an instructor to take abstract concepts and breathe life into them and make them real to the student. I think that it is important to understand and be constantly aware that different people learn in different ways. Because of this, I feel that it is important that an instructor uses a wide range of teaching methods in order to give each student the best opportunity to learn and understand the material.

I am a flexible teacher that can adapt to presenting information in various ways that will best help the child learn. I am very patient and understanding to the fact that not every person will understand the material right away. Even in high school, I was always willing to study for a test or work with my friends to help them in class. I have a very friendly personality and a true love for teaching. I want everyone to love math as much as me, as well as the value of a good education. Through my six years of teaching several different grades in two different states, I have learned valuable techniques to make math easier to understand. I encourage students to think by prompting with lots of open ended questions and allow students the opportunity to learn from their mistakes It is through this self-discovery and understanding that students can learn to think mathematically. I also firmly believe in lots of USEFUL practice when learning a new concept, and strongly disagree with busy work. Just as much can be learned from five well thought out problems and less time wasted than doing fifty routine skills prac ... read more

I graduated from UNF in 1993 with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in the field of Management. The degree required classes in Accounting, Finance, Algebra and Economics. Mathematics has risen to be one of my preferred subjects, tutoring this subject for a year to date.
I do believe that all children have the ability to learn the subjects however not all children are in the right mind to do so. My goal is to show in real world, understandable terms the subjects we will work on. I believe that if a child is explained the rules in terms and words he/she understands, then he/she will grasp the material and carry it with them into the future rather than trying to cram for an exam with no retention.

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to break things down to the component level in order to show the inner workings and the why of things for a more complete understanding. However, not all students are interested nor need to know the inner workings of things to succeed so I adjust my style to suit the student's needs. I do enjoy that "Aha!" moment when I've been able to break through a student's barrier and help them see the how and the why of something. It makes my day when that happens. I often hear students tell me; "I wish they would have taught me that in school!". I'm not sure if everything needed to succeed in school is being taught in school but I'm glad to be able to help someone in accomplishing their goals.

A Little Bit About Me...

After sub teaching the last couple of years I have found most kids want to learn but need a lot of "structure". If their personal "structure" isn't there it is difficult for them. This is also true for kids who are advanced. I believe in no cell phones, electronic devices, and trying to figure out what each child strengths and weaknesses are and then use those strengths to help them learn. I am not against having background music playing during homework time because it doesn't bother other children. It is a problem however in the classroom.

I am very flexible to each student's situation. I have a way of finding layman's terms for many difficult concepts. I prepare adequately before each lesson and have a well-rounded education so I am ready for any question the student may have.
I have been tutoring on and off through the years, and recently I was looking for a teaching job in Atlanta and became certified to teach high school mathematics in the state of Georgia. When I was in college, I tutored many of my friends and still keep in touch with them to this day. Many of them credit me as the reason they were able to pass a class.
