My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : 4.0 in Shakespeare Literature class. Paper on Justice in Shakespeare's Italian plays presented during conference in 2008.

I believe in identifying where a student lies on the subject he/she is studying before going further. The advantage of one on one tutoring compared to classroom is that the lesson can be based around where the student’s strengths and weaknesses are rather than a blanket method. I also believe that the skills used in English can be best practiced and analyzed through writing rather than worksheets and tests. Therefore, I believe in having the student write on a variety of subjects and working through these pieces to show where they can improve.
I graduated from Fitchburg State University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s of Science in English and Professional Writing. I went on to become a staff writer for the Lowell Sun, a daily print publication in Lowell, Massachusetts. When I was laid off due to budget cuts, I wrote freelance for several entertainment and political publications. I a ... read more

College Undergrad Looking to Tutor English Students

Not only was English my favorite subject as well as the one I was most proficient in in high school, it eventually became my major in college. I majored in Journalism at The University of New Hampshire, and while I have not yet received my Bachelor's of Arts from the institution I am a mere handful of credits away from earning it (9, to be exact), an accomplishment I am attempting to achieve by transferring credits over from The Community College of Rhode Island. While attending UNH, I wrote for the school's newspaper, The New Hampshire, edited my fellow writer's work, and eventually went on to intern and temporarily work for our local Valley Breeze.
While I have never conducted a formal tutoring session, I have edited the work of my peers and more recently assisted my girlfriend's younger sister with the completion of her college essay. From my experience, I have found that I p ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am definitely stronger and more versed in Humanities generally than for example math and science. I write myself and am highly interested in both creative and analytical writing. I am adept at interpreting literature and art and I have a knack for phrasing language in an effective manner. Primarily, I write musical lyrics but also I do some prose writing. Due to these qualities, my teaching style is more interpretive than technical. I encourage the student to explore the academic territory for themselves and to make sure they understand the material in their own manner of constructing language not just in the way that they are "supposed to." In this manner, I believe internalizing what one's learning leads to greater retention.
I am an art history enthusiast holding a degree in that subject area. I have a lot of experience working with youth in both academic and athletic settings ... read more

In Spring 2009, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Duke University and was offered a merit scholarship to the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Emerson College. At Emerson, my work as a teaching assistant provided me with experience working one-on-one with students to revise their essays. I have tutored in English, writing, and math. Through the graduate course “Teaching College Composition,” I learned how to respond to student writing and what strategies are best taught to beginning writers. Finally, my extensive personal experience with writing makes me an ideal tutor for anyone looking for help during any stage of the writing process.
