I believe children learn best when they can form a connection to their school work. Writing skills can be improved by using topics that are relevant to the student's life. When working on Reading skills I often use high interest topics such as the arts, sports, computers and science to encourage students to excel. Math can also become more meaningful by using real life situations and manipulatives. It is my goal to increase students' self esteem by providing situations in which they can succeed.
During my 23 years of teaching I implemented Kindergarten through 6th grade New York State curriculum in a classroom setting. I attended workshops that focused on computer education, Multiage classroom and positive discipline.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy the challenge of working with children. My eldest daughter is a graduate of the University of Georgia and I have two teenagers currently in Middle and high school. They have augmented my ability to be patient and flexible when assisting with their homework. Further, their diverse curriculum has made it necessary to brush up on their current subjects as well as my teaching skills. Both are top students and both have won good citizenship awards. I feel that family and teacher support sets the dynamic that allows children to grow and gain knowledge in their ongoing endeavors.

Having completed my B.A. in Mathematics, with a minor in adolescent education, a Computer Science degree, and graduating with a 3.65 GPA, and a 4.0 in content has fueled my success. Combining that with presently finishing my Masters in Teaching with Technology, three years of teaching mathematics and 5 years of tutoring experience, in which I tutored several subjects I feel that I have a lot to add to the success of students. I began teaching in fifth grade when my science teacher conceded that I knew more about sharks than he did, so when we got to that lesson, I took over for two days. In tenth grade, I had an internship at my high school teaching ninth grade Global Studies. When I graduated college, I began substitute teaching while I wrote my first few novels. I have substituted in every major subject at the high school level. I have also been an adjunct professor teaching study skills and business english at a local college.
I tend to prefer lectures combined with textbook assignments as opposed to teaching either using films, powerpoint presentations or computers. I graduated high school in 2000 with a local diploma and then went on to college at Utica School of Commerce. I graduated in 2002 with an Associated Degree as an Administrative Specialist. I have worked at a few different jobs and just went back to college again at Utica School of Commerce and got my certificate degree as a Medical Office Assistant.
When helping others, I do it two ways. I tell them how to do it and guide them through it. Other times, I show them how to do it. However, I do not do it for them. I would love to have the chance to help children succeed in their education! It would be an honor!

While at Syracuse I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as well as an Art Education Initial certification degree.
