Throughout all of my academic career, I have never been paid for helping other students-my friends-with their homework. Yet, I have still done it when they asked. In high school, I usually helped the struggling athletes, even though I too was an athlete; this continued in college. In sophomore year of college, I was the peer teacher in Stephens Success class, where I helped students with various issues. I hold a Bachelor and a Master of Science degree in Science Education. I was certified in the State of Louisiana to teach Chemistry, Biology, General Science, and Computer Literacy. I taught high school Chemistry, Physics, Computer Literacy, and Study Skills. I have taught Biology Lab courses and Computer Information Systems courses at the college level, and have substantial experience teaching algebra to students preparing for the GED exam.
The most important element of teaching is to realize one is teaching a person. In a tutoring situation, it is especially important to discover exactly how to present material to the student. As a teacher, I seek to understand the student and then present the material using terms and examples the student can understand.
