Have fun learning and reach for excellence!

My personal style of learning is to learn by doing. I get my students involved in any process and get them to actually do the work so they learn it from experience, not just reading about it and taking for granted they know what is going on. Seeing the steps in action and seeing the final result brings a sense of accomplishment, which helps a student learn the correct way of doing whatever it is they are trying to learn.
I have lead many training sessions dealing with a multitude of different topics. I do my homework, and make sure I am fully prepared before any training session. I want to make sure I know the answers to any possible question before the questions are asked. I have tutored students one-on-one and in small groups from different levels of math to every aspect of English, grammar, and writing. I have taught many classes in painting and drawing, and I am a constan ... read more

After a few years of working as an Engineer with Alabama Power Company, I studied to earn my Masters of Business Administration from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.I believe that having a broad knowledge of all subjects is very important. I am currently in school to go back and teach high school math. I am a bit of a math nerd but LOVE to read, so I enjoy English as well. I specialize in teaching math and English at all levels. I would say my teaching style is more relaxed. I believe this helps one see students weaknesses and strengths better. It also allows one to compare the overall effect of teaching for each student. When I see a student falling behind then thats when I take action and try top get them where they should be in that area.
My experience is one that has taken me many different places to meet many diffrent people. I have always had a gift of helping others and conveying to them my knowledge. As a recent graduate, I have learned the importance of education. I have earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Not only do I contain a strong understanding in those subjects but took several classes in other areas to become a well-rounded individual. I dedicated my time most of my time to studies but I also took time out to participate in campus activities, as well as, participate in numerous volunteer programs. I received rewards for my dedication to tutoring and mentoring the youth in the inner city.
I enjoy working, teaching, and mentoring children. I have learned to adjust to the different learning styles of children, which makes it easier for the child to feel more comfortable with learning. I think differentiated instruction is the best way to teach. This essentially means changing up the instruction in an effort to allow all students to learn. Because students have different learning styles, teachers should try to teach the material in new, different, and creative ways. Teachers should consider the way that the particular child learns best (ex. auditory, visual, performing, ect.)as well as brain hemisphere dominance. Teachers should cater instruction to match the needs of individual learners.
During graduate school, I was a substitute teacher, taught a teaching writing practicum at UAB, and was a reading tutor. I have taken 18 hours of graduate level English classes, and this is more than is required to earn a Master's degree in secondary English education. I als ... read more

I can teach with or without a textbook. My great advantage in privately tutoring for 10 years is in my being forced to work with all levels of mathematics; that is, while most teachers teach one or two math subjects only, I have had to brush up on everything from elementary algebra to calculus year, after year, after year. I know how to "read" students to figure out what they know, what they don't, and the course of action we need to take to get them up to speed FAST. My philosophy is in blending the Socratic Method and demonstration to give students the actual language of mathematics. My business has been 100% referral based for the last 10 years, and it stems from getting amazing results quickly.
During my Sophomore Year at College of Charleston I worked in the Math Lab tutoring all levels of classical mathematics up to Calculus III. I happened to be the only tutor who checked a ... read more

I began tutoring students in 1984 while working in the math lab as an undergraduate student at the University of Southern Mississippi. After completing my Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics with a general science minor, I had the opportunity to teach college algebra as a graduate teaching assistant. I have been tutoring/teaching mathematics and some sciences ever since. I have experience tutoring students on skills needed for the ACT and for the Alabama High School Graduation Exam.
I truly enjoy teaching math and enjoy watching the 'click' when a student begins to understand the concepts. I believe many students have been erroneously convinced that "they don't get math" or that math is too hard. I believe in not just working through the problems at hand but in trying to help each student gain a better understanding of the thinking process involved in solving problems. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored students in math and science (mainly math) for over 13 years. I have helped students in various levels of mathematics - basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. After working with me on a consistent basis (2/3 days/week) many of the students have received honors in their math courses, including "Most Improved" and "Highest Average". I am also proud to say that a couple of students have actually decided to pursue careers that require a good understanding of math - i.e. engineering, architecture.
I enjoy working with students of all ages, although most of my experience has been with middle school age and older. I use a couple of different techniques to help students understand math, including using visual aides, problem solving techniques, role reversal (where they explain a lesson to me), blackboard/whiteboard work, and games. I believe it's ... read more

As a premedical student, my main focus during college was on biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Through extensive lab work, I have also learned how to write scholarly reports. During my undergraduate years, I have taught inorganic and organic chemistry to sophomore and junior undergraduate students for 4 months. Also, I have taught elementary and middle school students about labs in Birmingham's McWane Center. Currently, I work for Examkrackers, which is a company that focuses on the MCAT exam. I prepare and teach lectures to students who hope to get into medical school. Even though I focus mainly on math and science, I have experience with different age groups and am comfortable teaching students above the age of 5.
