I try to adapt my teaching style to the student. I keep trying different methods until we find what works best. This is probably why many of my students have told me that I am great at explaining things so they understand it. Being proficient at math is similar to being proficient at playing a musical instrument. You can’t learn to play an instrument by going to concerts and watching other people perform. Similarly, you can’t learn math by watching the teacher solve problems. I try to guide students to the correct solution and give immediate feedback while they work.

I very much enjoy teaching both children and young adults. It gives me great satisfaction in helping others achieve a higher level of knowledge and skills. In addition, I feel that tutoring is a two-way street, whereby both the student learns material from the tutor, while at the same time the tutor learns how to better present the material in a way that is conducive for the student's learning. As such I strive to create a teaching environment that is both welcoming, yet challenging. Lastly, when it comes to learning and teaching, I believe in perseverance. Not every student has the ability to comprehend and retain everything all at once. Therefore as a tutor I would strive to instill this quality in my students.

teaching is something that, to me, is unique when dealing with science education. When dealing with science there are many different ways of looking at the same problem. It is important for the student to keep his or her view of the problem and to work off of that view, rather than to change the view to the teachers. This makes it much more interesting for the teacher to adapt to the different ways of learning for each student and to build their education off of how they view science.

My own learning style is a combination of visual and auditory, which has led me to believe flexibility is key. There is no one “best” method which works for all students, so my primary job is to help the student teach me the way he or she learns best. My aim in tutoring, regardless of learning style, is to increase understanding to a point where my student can not only perform the desired action, but also “teach” the concept back to me without assistance. I believe once mastery of a concept has reached this point, it forms a solid, lasting foundation for the next one. Just as I am bringing up my children to be independent adults, my goal for my students is to help them gain methods of learning so that my services are no longer needed.

My broad-based educational background gives me a firm foundation for interacting with students on a variety of levels. I have taught both French and Mathematics at the college level, have tutored Math, Physics and Chemistry at the college level, and have substituted in high schools and junior highs as well. As a research mathematician with GE, I have explained mathematical concepts to adults with a wide range of backgrounds.
No one teaching style works with all students, or even a majority of them. I enjoy the challenge of finding ways to make academic subjects interesting and relevant to different students. I usually use a combination of guided discovery, question-and-answer, and hands-on approaches to teaching and learning.

I have had much success with my style of tutuoring, and take much pride and personal satisfaction as a result. I listen carefully to how children approach a problem, and follow their through process in determining a solution. I often guide them towards the correct way (or possible several ways) of approaching a problem, as opposed to just giving an answer, etc. I also use analogies a lot when helpingh them analyze a given problem, a demonstrate how an approach can be used to solve similar problems.
I am a graduate of SUNY-Binghamton (BS - Mathematics). I have tutored students throughout college and on the side during my careeer as an IT Professional. I am also a sub-math teacher within the Saratoga Springs CSD.
