Most of the struggling students i have encountered seem to have a low confidence in themselves that interferes with their studies. I believe this is due to the manner in which students are tested; in order to fully understand a concept, the student has to be able to explain the concept and its application in his/her own words. By starting from the basic concept of the field of study and working up, the student can acquire real knowledge of the subject. I first started tutoring while attending NCSSM, a state funded boarding school for the "best and brightest" students in North Carolina. I went on to continue tutoring at NC State University, where I took a formal class on tutoring to better my abilities, and tutored non-physics major students, including one with a learning disability. After gaining a B.A. in Creative Writing and minor in physics, I moved to Florida where I obtained my teaching certificate for physics, grade 6-12. I tutored while looking for a job, helping younger children in math. I am a high energy type teacher. I like to do creative things to motivate my students and make them realize that learning math can be fun.
