I have learned several teaching techniques, but the one that I prefer is the military training style. I tell them what I am going to teach, then I teach them, and then I tell them what I taught them. A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently a substitute teacher in the New Hanover County school system. I have 4+ years teaching in middle school and high school classes. I have prepared and taught classes during my previous career with the Federal Government to adults. My major in Biology gave me a strong background in the sciences and math. I have always found these subjects interesting as well as essential for success in work. I try and communicate my enthusiasm for these subjects to my students. I have completed all courses for my Associates Degree and was a trainer at my previous position. When in high school, I was a college preparatory student and graduated with a high school Diploma as well as 12 Advanced Placement courses and completed my International Baccalaureate diploma.
I love teaching all grades and levels. The most important aspect of teaching is to know your student. Each individual learns in different ways, some are tactile learners, some are visual, and some are auditory learners. Incorporating all aspects into my teaching style assists the retention of the material. It also has to be relatable to the student, so we have to use relevant examples that they understand. All children can learn any subject if you can spark their interest. There is no better feeling than seeing the light turn on and the sense of accomplishment in a child's eyes.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in trying to incorporate each learning style into my teaching plan. This means that I use lecture, reading assignments, and hands-on learning to accomplish this. My main focus is to make learning matter. I have often been heard using the phrase..."So What?" I ask that question because I firmly believe that effective learning not only teaches the what...but also the why. I want students to be able to apply their learning. My educational background (I’m an Ivy League grad), high levels of achievement, work experience, mentoring and teaching activities gave me the skills to be an effective tutor. As a senior employee, I mentored new employees. As a graduate teaching assistant, I worked with college students in helping them understand complex subjects. My teaching style would best be described as conversational at best, drawing out of the student, their knowledge or lack of knowledge. I have taught my two honors student sons that I add to their body of knowledge and they are to coalesce the information to their understanding.
Having a degree in Philosophy & Religion has many advantages in teaching. I have found to better understand a subject it is best to go and study many different resources for that subject, a macro-view. However the complicated subject is, a person who knows that subject will be able to present it in a simple concise manner. With this approach I am able to study and present a variety of subjects in a concise but exciting manner. The full grasps of studying P&R encompasses many sub fields of study : i.e. history, psychology, sociology, pretty much all the liberal arts.
