I think the biggest part of getting children to understand what they need to know is relating to something that they like. For example, if a child likes basketball then you can relate counting and math to how the players score points in a basketball game. I think it is important to be patient and get to know the children in order to teach them effectively. I also think that making learning fun and inventive is an effective way of teaching.
When I graduated from high school, I went to college and completed my AA degree. I wanted out of college and immediately started working and making money. I have been working with children for more than 20 years, as a tutor and mentor. My profession and academic education was in business and psychology, but my passion has always been working with children. For the last 7 years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, for Lee County Schools. And for the last 5 years, I have spent my summer months traveling throughout SE Asia, volunteering time in orphanages and schools, teaching the children English.
My teaching style totally depends on the student(s) that I am working with. Not all children learn at the same pace, nor do they all have the same attention span. That said, I find that applying the “token economy” approach, in getting the children to focus on the task, is very effective. If given time and patience, children are capable of accomplishing most anything.

When teaching to a group, ideally all styles would be touched on (auditory, visual, hands-on). When working one-on-one, though, it is possible to teach towards that individual's particular style of learning. This works so much better than a one-size-fits-all method of teaching. If one way of teaching isn't working, I search for a different approach, until I find one that works. I try to explain concepts using ideas and terms that the student is familiar with.
