A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with children for more than 20 years, as a tutor and mentor. My profession and academic education was in business and psychology, but my passion has always been working with children. For the last 7 years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, for Lee County Schools. And for the last 5 years, I have spent my summer months traveling throughout SE Asia, volunteering time in orphanages and schools, teaching the children English.
My teaching style totally depends on the student(s) that I am working with. Not all children learn at the same pace, nor do they all have the same attention span. That said, I find that applying the “token economy” approach, in getting the children to focus on the task, is very effective. If given time and patience, children are capable of accomplishing most anything.

After graduating from college with my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, I taught a year of Sp. Ed.,at the elementary level. I returned to school and earned my M.A. in Psychology. I then taught elementary Sp. Ed. for two more years. Shortly after, I began homeschooling my own children. My oldest is now in high school and has been homeschooled the entire time. My teaching style is best described as adaptive. We all learn differently, some more so by doing, others by seeing or listening, and others by thinking it through. Learning is a combination of processes, emphasizing what works best. For me, the approach is to use what works best for the student to learn what needs to be learned, with the underlying objective of the student learning how to learn - meaning a self-awareness of what works best for him or her. The tough learning is slugging it through the stuff that we just don’t seem to get or seems to have no value in our future lives. I believe that students of all levels learn from auditory, visual and hands on experience. Each has their own preference and more often than not, uses at least two types of this knowledge. Allowing students the access of these skills will only increase their ability to thrive. Each student will perform according to their own capability using all of these skills.
