I have been a tutor since high school. In HS I tutored for ESL (English as a Second Language). More recently I have been a Math tutor at Augsburg College. I am proficient in the subjects ranging from pre-algebra to calculus 3. I am pretty good with statistics and logic (Discrete Math) as well. I also have experience teaching younger children as well. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding. I feel, in the past, that many of the peers I tutored not only obtained/recollected more information, but were more comfortable in a quiet, relaxed environment. I have always had a passion for helping others learn. In high school I tutored students from different schools in math. After graduating with two bachelor's degrees from the University of Minnesota I began working full time as a financial analyst for Target Corporation. At the same time, I started teaching part time at a learning center. In the past three years I have been able to help students of all ages from first grade through college. I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. I understand there is not one specific way to teach a subject and the key is asking questions to find out what will help a particular student. My experience working with the Minnesota Math Corps program has allowed me to work with a variety of students who are at different levels in math. I have learned a great deal in this time about how to structure lessons for my students in ways that not only teach them the process of doing the work, but also the background information about why things work the way they do. I prefer to break a lesson up into a few parts, starting with the student being able to use manipulatives to physically show how to work throught the subject, then moving on to representational and abstract portions that allow the student to further apply and practice what they are learning.
