I like to teach ESL from the Communicative Competence ideal. Integrating reading writing speaking listening into thematic units. Learning a new language requires hands on experience. If for example we are doing a unit on weather then my students may role play a weather man. Gather vocabulary from a newspaper. Count change as if they were really buying something. Read and write from a reporters perspective, or even travel to a museum with a reoprt and description of things they have seen using adjective and adverbs for color and detail. I also believe reading should be taught at the appropriate reading level for comprehensions sake. If a reader is below the 98% error level, they will not succeed. I believe that every person has an optimal way in which they learn. Ideas that seem complicated can be made easy by simply changing the way in which it is presented. As a teacher it is important for me recognize how my students best learn and use that to present material. I also believe that students need to feel comfortable with their teachers. That is why I make an effort to get to know my students on a personal level. Knowing the things that are important to them helps to make a connection and can motivate them to learn.

I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. I understand there is not one specific way to teach a subject and the key is asking questions to find out what will help a particular student. I find it helpful to use processes students are familiar with and expand upon that knowledge. I am a firm believer in showing why something works the way it does, not just showing the solution. This process, along with patience and understanding, has been useful my past experience and I believe it will be in the future as well.
