I began working as a Water Safety Instructor when I was 16 and taught swimming to people age 3 to age 76. I worked as a Teacher's Assistant at West Virginia university and taught my own section of a one credit course required of all freshmen students while working on a BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. While working on my MA in English Literature with a Certificate in Folklore at George Mason university, I worked as a substitute teacher and then was hired as a full time middle school English teacher. I always tried to keep my approach as grounded as possible so that even my least talented tutees could grasp the task at hand. For instance, I feel it important to always sound out the words on a page, making sure the words flow smoothly off the tongue and not just in the mind. I do this so that the writing style, while formal, is also practical and easily accessed by the student as they write. I also feel it best to not focus too strongly on a student's weaknesses, but to feel out their strengths so that they may use those strengths to really work out their difficulties.
