My studies have given me practical experience working with children of different abilities and readiness. I sincerely believe it is the teacher's responsibility to adapt lessons to the student's learning style. I strive to create connections to student past lessons and keep difficult concepts in easy, relative terms that simplify information for the student to digest. I prefer teaching lessons through discovery learning and constructivist approaches, and will ask as many questions to my students as my students will to me. I began working as a Water Safety Instructor when I was 16 and taught swimming to people age 3 to age 76. I worked as a Teacher's Assistant at West Virginia university and taught my own section of a one credit course required of all freshmen students while working on a BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. While working on my MA in English Literature with a Certificate in Folklore at George Mason university, I worked as a substitute teacher and then was hired as a full time middle school English teacher.
