When considering my teaching style, it is difficult to explain a single process for teaching. When working with different people it is important to remain creative, inventive, and patient. Every person has different learning styles and it is important to recognize in that person what helps them understand more fully. Whether it is diagram and pictures, breaking a complex problem into many simple parts, comparing similar examples that are familiar to the person, or simply taking the time to make sure that the child feels comfortable saying "I don't know". All of these are useful tools, but in my opinion by far the most important is patience. Remaining patient when someone doesn't understand is the absolute most important thing. Too many children are willing to give up on a subject, all they need is someone who knows they can do it, and can show them how.

During my undergraduate career, there were multiple influences that contributed to my passion for teaching. First, I tutored college students from Asia who were exchange students. This gave me the opportunity to apply what we learned in the classroom, and adapt to a culture that learns differently than Americans. Second, I tutored a high schooler in Spanish. I used this as a tool to see how a person can still learn when they are not interested in the subject. Third, I taught English last summer in Mexico. I was given a group of high school students, a book of lessons, and hardly any supplies. Resources were slim, but my creativity grew.
I develop most of my lesson plans using GLAD principles. I like to use multiple senses, student interaction and various resources to keep the student active. When teaching a language, it is important to know the basic grammar structure first, and t ... read more

Throughout my coursework at Eau Claire, I have adopted a constructivist approach to teaching. That is, I believe that every child is unique and learns differently. It is the instructors job to find out how each child learns the material, whether it be visually with demonstrations or integrating the material to an area of interest (like a favorite sport), and then cater to their particular need. As a result, I am easy to approach, likeable, and try to be a supportive as opposed to disciplinary mentor. I am also a huge fan of answering the 'Why do I need to know this?' question, and do my best to connect the problem or subject to something applicable to the child.
My first two years were devoted to an education degree. I gained experience in tutoring, including assisting elementary students and mentoring a group of advanced math students. I was actually accepted into the school ... read more

I believe that the hands-on approach works best for most students, learning by applying their knowledge. I feel I have made a difference i ... read more
