A Little Bit About Me...

I am extremely passionate about the education of our youth, and I believe that it is the foundation of a growing society. I have worked with children in urban high schools and juvenile facilities, and I have thus learned to appreciate the difference that a dedicated teacher can make in an environment that does not lend itself to learning and growth. In addition, I have worked with adults who did not have the opportunity to receive a quality education in their youth. Their willingness and excitement to learn was inspiring. A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science from Grand Valley State University in 2008, and has equipped me with the knowledge of many applications of biological and physical sciences. I worked in a research lab in college and was responsible for training new students. In addition I acted as the supervisor of the laboratory for a group of high school interns, working to advise them on their research projects and educate them on basic laboratory protocols. After graduation, I accepted a job where I acted as a laboratory manager, directly training new staff laboratory techniques. My teaching style has been shaped by Bloom’s taxonomy for the cognitive domains and, more recently, by the experimental learning model of Kolb. Both of these models stress the importance of leading students through learning sequences that foster a more complete learning than can be achieved from a single perspective. For example, rather than relying on lecture as the sole means to learning Kolb’s model suggests guiding students through four learning cycles: Concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation.
