A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, volunteering for the Salvation Army, or running after school programs after graduating. I am a PA certified tutor, with conflict resolution, mentor, and CERT training (Community Emergency Rescue Team). It is important to me to have a profession where I feel that I am helping other people to progress in their lives. I genuinely care about the well being of each person I come into contact to and want to help in any way I can to make life easier, and more fulfilling for all of us.

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

A Little Bit About Me...

The purpose of my teaching is to allow every student to succeed. I will try any way possible to reach this goal for every child. Working in the sciences, I feel that inquiry learning is important and hands-on experience is essential. Each student has their own way of learning best and I try to find that learning style and use it whenever possible.
I graduated from IUP with a degree in Biology Education. I am certified in Biology and Middle School Science. I taught for one semester at Central Bucks School District where I taught Academic Biology, Astronomy and Oceanography. I then taught two years at Gateway School District where I taught 8th grade physical science. I now have a permanent position at Yough School District where I teach 7th grade Life Science. I am also currently pursuing my Masters in Education.

More About This Tutor...

The most challenging aspect of teaching comes from the many different styles in which students acquire information. While some students benefit more from a hands-on approach, others are better served by visualizations/illustrations, while still others learn best by repetition of material. I have always approached students with an open mind, allowing them to help me understand what it is they need to learn materials in an efficient manner. As such, as an instructor, I try to incorporate many different approaches to the materials, in the hope that I will reach as many students as possible. I love working with children of all ages and abilities and helping them with academics. I don't believe I have a specific teaching style. I know that I have to be flexible and creative with each student. Everyone learns differently, and I feel it is my obligation to find what works for each child. I do belive in providing hands on and real life scenarios when teaching.
I have been very successful in academics throughout my education. I was valedictorian of my high school, and I received the top honors in English, French, and Accounting. I also maintained a 4.0 average throughout my college education.
