Successful Learning Begins With A Creative Mind

I went to college at Westminster College for Math then changed my major to Fine Arts. I am proficient in Math up to Calculus 2 and i can teach Art very well. I have tutoring experience through high school and i work well with high school students. I can tutor from my home or i can travel. I am located in Oakmont Pennsylvania and I am willing to teach all ages. If you choose to come to my home i have three small dogs (they will not harm anyone).

I am very patient as long as the student is trying to learn and cares about the work. Mental support of students is half the battle.
I am comfortable tutoring lower level math classes, mechanical design, or other engineering classes. Writing classes such as English, literature, or fine arts are fine as well. A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate at Slippery Rock University, I was approached by my adviser and chair-person in Physics to tutor their physics classes. I accepted their offer and within the two years of tutoring physics I enjoyed helping fellow students learn and understand the concepts of physics. Also, while helping others I could use the knowledge I have learned in previous classes and gain a better understanding of the field of physics. I am currently in the 3-2 Physics/Engineering program between Penn State and Slippery Rock studying Electrical Engineering. I have recently completed the first 3 years at Slippery Rock and in the fall will be attending Penn State University. I have completed up to 300 and some 400 level classes in Physics and Math at Slippery Rock.

I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.
I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

I have been very successful in academics throughout my education. I was valedictorian of my high school, and I received the top honors in English, French, and Accounting. I also maintained a 4.0 average throughout my college education.
I love working with children of all ages and abilities and helping them with academics. I don't believe I have a specific teaching style. I know that I have to be flexible and creative with each student. Everyone learns differently, and I feel it is my obligation to find what works for each child. I have noticed a couple things in my years tutoring people in math. I have noticed that many people have trouble with the fundamental concepts of fractions, decimals, order of operations, and adding/subtracting positive and negative numbers. If a student does not have these concepts together much of the 'higher level' mathematics can seem a blur and highly confusing. I have also noticed that students like real world or relevant examples when learning a new math concept. I like to find out what my student is into and tailor problems to things that affect their every day life. Practical real world examples can significantly increase a students retainment of concepts. I also make it a point to keep the learning environment positive and upbeat.
