My teaching philosophy starts out with essentialism which believes in a strong core curriculum and high academic standards. I believe it is important to have a strong foundation on which to build upon. After ensuring a strong foundation I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe students should be taught what is relevant today while becoming more independent learners, by utilizing problem solving skills and critical thinking. I teach the foundation and build upon that based upon what is relevant in a particular field today. I also include student-centered teaching strategies. I believe in order to learn a student must have base knowledge of a subject that leads into hands on assignments which require mastery of a subject. Students must have both of these in order to truly master what they are learning. I also believe that team based learning is essential today. It is i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in history. I currently am enrolled at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to obtain a Masters Degree in Education with a license to teach in the state of Tennessee in the middle grades. I have worked as a nanny during undergraduate for a couple different families. I have also worked through the YMCA as an after school teacher where I helped students K-6 with their homework. After graduating with a BA is History, I have worked as a Pre-Kindergarten Teacher, a Kindergarten Substitute Teacher, and an after school teacher for children 4 years through kindergarten.

More About This Tutor...

As part of my education program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, I was required to complete a full, yearlong internship. I interned from August-October in a 2nd grade classroom and from October-May in a 3rd grade classroom, Monday-Friday. I went from "student teacher" to co-teacher and my mentor and I would divide the day equally on who taught what. Also, as a part of my internship, I completed and presented an Action Research project which focused on writing in 3rd grade.
I have a passion for teaching and working with children. I feel that children are like unpainted canvases and teachers have the ability to help them realize the value of education. Education is priceless and it is something that no one can take away from you. Throughout my entire life, I have always been driven to do the best of my ability. This is especially the case when it comes to academics. While I was a college student, I learned the importance of teaching other colleagues the skill and technique to master a course. Even though my degree was in science, the subject of mathematics has always been a strong area for me as well. Throughout my tutoring experience, I have tutored students in mathematics and sciences, embracing the inner teacher inside of me.

In my classroom I have a variety of learning centers where students practice the skills that they have learned. Centers are designed for multiple learning levels and interests.
I have taught kindergarten for one year and pre-kindergarten for two years.
