My approach is simple: assess the student's academic weaknesses, review the strengths, then teach the new material in order to bridge the content or skill. "Scaffolding" is the best means by which to teach so that the student understands the significance of the lesson. Too often, teachers play sage-on-stage, thereby neglecting to connect what the student already knows with the new material.
I am a credential-holding elementary school teacher with experience ranging from Kindergarten through 6th grade. Also, I have tutored children and adults in English language arts, from basic grammar to college composition writing. Over the past 15 years I have had variety of different teaching experiences. I taught literature as a TA at UC Santa Barbara while studying for my Masters. I have tutored K-12 students in both Math and English. While studying for my undergraduate I assited in running a homeless shelter where I taught many of the children reading, writing, and math. I have a passion for teaching and am a mother myself and understand the true value of educating our youth.
It truly depends on the student and the subject. I try to adapt my teaching style to what the student needs. If one approach is not working, then we can work together to find an approach that does. I began tutoring as a high school student and throughout college I continued to tutor privately. I hired on at a tutoring agency in October of 2000 and was with them for almost 4 years. I continued private tutoring after leaving the agency and also worked briefly as a tutor during an off track period. I have tutored in many subjects, including English, mathematics and various other subjects at different levels. I have worked with students K-12 as well as adults.
