My personal style of learning is to learn by doing. I get my students involved in any process and get them to actually do the work so they learn it from experience, not just reading about it and taking for granted they know what is going on. I can teach with or without a textbook. My great advantage in privately tutoring for 10 years is in my being forced to work with all levels of mathematics; that is, while most teachers teach one or two math subjects only, I have had to brush up on everything from elementary algebra to calculus year, after year, after year. I use a couple of different techniques to help students understand math, including using visual aides, problem solving techniques, role reversal (where they explain a lesson to me), blackboard/whiteboard work, and games.
