I am a classically trained painter, having studied under Sheldon Tapley at Centre College and Jacob Collins at the Grand Central Academy of Art in Manhattan. I have experience teaching drawing and painting to a variety of ages and experience levels. I specialize in painting from life, including: portraits, figures, fabric, still-life and old master copies. I have been painting for over ten years, first earning my degree from Centre College and later studying classical drawing and painting in New York City at the Grand Central Academy of Art. I am a recent graduate from Yale School of Art where I received my Masters of Fine Art in Painting/Printmaking. Before attending Yale I went to Asbury University where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Studio Art. I have experience teaching painting and drawing classes. My work ranges from painting, video, sculpture and installation. I have shown throughout Kentucky, Ohio and Connecticut. In 2014 I will be going to Iceland for a residency at Hafnarborg Museum, as well as Vermont to the Vermont Studio Center. I love to learn, which is why I love teaching children. Every child learns differently, because of this, teaching is a learning process as well! I believe that students learn best through hands on activities that allow them to internalize the concepts they are struggling with. Whether it is using math manipulatives to understand multiplication and division or using letter tiles to understand consonant blends in reading, hands on activities are the best way to learn. As an education major at Berea College, I volunteered my services as a tutor three nights a week in addition to my student teaching and education courses. I was also a Pre-Kindergarten teacher during the summer terms while I was in college. I am certified to teach all subjects grades K-5. I have my masters degree in Reading and Literacy Instruction. I have taken education classes at Northern Kentucky University. At one point, I was considering on being a Art Teacher. I didn't finish with that path, but I did gain much experience with children and knowledge during that time in working with students. I have worked and studied special needs children as well. I still consider going back for a Master's at some point in education. I think this job would be beneficial in my goals, and for my students, and a great learning experience for us both. I am not overbearing. I am laid back, but at the same time, I make sure that the student learns what he/she needs to learn. I am very patient. I try to respect the student and not make learning seem like a chore. Building a foundation of learning skills, even during a short tudoring session can really change a student's approach in all of their classes.
