I have worked quite a lot with elementary school children, whether it be in or outside of work. I have done independent tutor work, mainly in the fields of Art and Language Arts. In the past I had a long-term job in which I was required to interact with young children, and I did so willingly. For two years in a row, I taught a Beginner's Guitar course for children and the feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive. My teaching style is very holistic. I want to empower students to discover and employ their voices. I want to develop critical thinking skills, analysis, synthesis, and retention, basically, I want to help people *THINK* about what they are saying, what they are doing, to interpret the world around them. In the end, it is the student's choice whether or not they modify their papers. I believe in having a one on one discussion. I am resourceful. English and Writing CAN be Fun!

The collaborative learning approach, where students are encouraged to discuss what and how they're learning, is most effective. Students tend to engage much better with course material when the instructor has discussions with them, as opposed to lecturing at them.

My comments on tutoring Reading : In addition to having been a state-certified English teacher for 18 years, I tutored my way through college and beyond another 6 years.

I am a certified teacher of French and English; I have taught both subjects at the middle and high school levels for 18 years. In addition, I have 6 years of tutoring experience before becoming a teacher. I have worked with students of all ages, elementary through college. I am one course shy of my Masters' in French. I have worked with inner-city middle school students for more than 10 years, through a program called "Math Corps." (Google it.)
My teaching style...? I do not have only one; part of the point of tutoring is the ability to truly tailor styles/strategies to individuals or small groups. I must say that I am the funniest person I know, and I crack myself up all the time. Humor is always one of my favorite/best strategies.
