As a tutor of student athletes at Indiana University, I tutored students from all walks of life. I began by tutoring Biology and Spanish but the need for tutors in English, Writing, Chemistry and Statistics soon arose and I stepped up to fill those positions. Using previous knowledge from AP classes in high school, as well as recent knowledge gained from my classes, I was able to successfully convey new information in easy to understand and applicable terms to these students. My strength as a teacher is in using scaffolding to help students gain confidence as a learner. What that essentially means is that I provide a great deal of support and modeling to students learning new skills and concepts. Gradually, as they become more advanced in learning, I remove those supports so they are performing more independently. That technique, along with lots of personal support, makes me an excellent teacher.
Since 1970, I have been teaching English in grades 7-12 in both Middle and High School. My teaching has encompassed helping students become proficient in both writing and reading skills.
