I do not have a specific teaching style. Everyone is different, so one particular type of teaching style may not be as effective as another. In order to be effective, I think it is important to recognize the students strengths and weaknesses before embarking on a certain learning path.

As a college graduate, I have a passion for education and want to do all I can to see the youth of America excel. I am returning to school in pursuit of a 2nd Baccalaureate Degree in Elementary Education. I believe there is a need for the youth to prosper and education is key. I have experience in substitute teaching/tutoring from K-12 in the Alton School District and have also tutored adult college students in English courses. Education truly is a love of mine.
I love educating and much rather provide a fun and hands-on approach when teaching my students. I do not believe in the word can’t. That word takes me to a level where I am determined to help the students understand that all things are possible. I believe in hard work, persistency, and participation. I understand that each student learns on a different level and I am prepared to make a curriculum based on each stude ... read more

My style of teaching varies with the child, their age, personality, subject, and amount of time we have. Besides teaching 2nd grade religion for 14 years my daughter has ADD. I have worked with kids who need to keep moving while they learn, to kids who need complete quiet. Some kids are more visual learners; others need to act the lesson out, while others do fine quietly reading. The important thing is to make it interesting so they WANT to learn. Older kids with a higher level of maturity don't require as entertaining a lesson. They want to see how to apply what they are learning to their life. To know there is a reason to learn makes them WANT to learn, understanding WHY they will need to know the information makes the learning easier.

As a tutor, I understand my responsibility primarily as that of helping children reach their potential. I try to help my students understand concepts they are struggling with in primarily three ways. First, I find what their strengths are and see if I can extend understanding of these concepts to the one's they are struggling with. Secondly, I use many examples of a concept to break complex math down into simpler, concise ideas and problem-solving techniques. Third, I try a number of different conceptual approaches to determine which is the most useful for a particular student.

I have always had a knack for the sciences and left the Midwest to follow my love of Marine Biology. While in school, I revisted my interest in the arts (painting, piano, and animation). It was then I realized I was passionate about so many topics and didn't want to limit myself to one thing! I've worked with kids throughout my entire life, whether I was teaching swim lessons, piano lessons, or tutoring. I took Spanish for 4 years in High School use it every chance I get. If I had the time I would take on degree after degree!
Speaking to children of all ages comes naturally to me. My parents both love being teachers and have been in the game for over 30 years a piece! I traveled to schools to give presentations on my marine mammal experiences to grades K-8. During my junior and senior year in college, I TA’ed a finance class called options pricing for two semesters. Options pricing was a difficult subject. I worked very hard to receive an A- for the course, which turned out to be my favor. I had insight to the intellectual hurdles other students had to overcome to master the material. So, teaching them came very naturally. In addition, I abandoned the lecture format for a very interactive teaching format. This allowed the students to ask many questions and allowed me to gage the level of comprehension from in the students real-time.
