My style of teaching varies with the child, their age, personality, subject, and amount of time we have. Besides teaching 2nd grade religion for 14 years my daughter has ADD. I have worked with kids who need to keep moving while they learn, to kids who need complete quiet. Some kids are more visual learners; others need to act the lesson out, while others do fine quietly reading. The important thing is to make it interesting so they WANT to learn. Older kids with a higher level of maturity don't require as entertaining a lesson. They want to see how to apply what they are learning to their life. To know there is a reason to learn makes them WANT to learn, understanding WHY they will need to know the information makes the learning easier.

As a tutor, I understand my responsibility primarily as that of helping children reach their potential. I try to help my students understand concepts they are struggling with in primarily three ways. First, I find what their strengths are and see if I can extend understanding of these concepts to the one's they are struggling with. Secondly, I use many examples of a concept to break complex math down into simpler, concise ideas and problem-solving techniques. During my junior and senior year in college, I TA’ed a finance class called options pricing for two semesters. Options pricing was a difficult subject. I worked very hard to receive an A- for the course, which turned out to be my favor. I had insight to the intellectual hurdles other students had to overcome to master the material. So, teaching them came very naturally. In addition, I abandoned the lecture format for a very interactive teaching format.
