I focus on starting small and helping the student develop on their own. For example, when I teach how to write a strong essay, we write many drafts of an introduction. Then, we write many drafts of body paragraphs. Last, we would focus on writing a conclusion. Then, by working seperately on all of an essay's parts, the combined product is much stronger. The art of teaching is similiar to building a house: you start with an idea, then a foundation, and finally the framework.
I volunteered at the Ocean County Library writing center for four years and helped my peers construct, organize, and layout essays. As I am the son of a grade school teacher who is now retired, I often helped my mother tutor her students. I spent two years substitute teaching in New York City public schools. In this time, I wanted a summer vacation, but couldn't afford it, so I arranged for a working vacation, Volunteering as a reader to autistic children in a summer camp run by the Association for Metroarea Autistic Children, for two summers. I have since spent time working with and teaching autistic and developmentally disabled people at two businesses made for them.
As I myself was born autistic, I know that you need to teach in the way that the child learns and take advantage of his loves and special abilities, so, say, if he loves computers, find or write an educational computer program. If he loves cartoon characters, involve those characters in your lessons.
