Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects!

I hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry and currently work as a research scientist discovering and developing new drugs to combat human diseases. Students come with various background and motivation levels and ways of learning. A tutor needs to be able to discover within the student the best way for that student to learn. I believe students should be pressed not to memorize facts but to use critical thinking skills, tying things together and seeing relations so a multitude of similar problems can be solved. There are many ways science can be taught. Over the years, I have found that tutoring works best by breaking the material down into mini lessons, give the students guided practice in solving problems (we solve it together), and then independent practice where the student demonstrates mastery of the concept.

I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal opportunity to learn. It is not just about grades and assignments, that is just the means to an end, but it is about learning. In order for the students to learn, the teacher needs to be passionate about the students as well as the subject that is being taught.
