I try to make learning fun and relate it to things that people experience in the outside world. It's so satisfying to 'see the light bulb turn on' when they are shown, for example, how a pinecone represents the Fibonacci series, or a fern a fractal.
My formal education includes a B.S. degree in Chemistry and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering both from Purdue University. I enjoy teaching and took the opportunity to serve as a Chemistry T.A. I prefer a one on one teaching program and encourage questions from my students to try to follow their needs rather than an arbitrary program of lectures. I encourage my lecture students to read the material before to make the lecture more understandable and allow them to use questioning to enlarge their understanding.

During my undergraduate years, I started tutoring at the various tutoring centers on campus. I tutored science, mathematics, French, Spanish and Italian. The best method I have found for relating mathematical and scientific concepts to students has been with a majority of examples. While explaining theory is necessary for a student to gain the basics of a concept it is only through working problems and exercises that a student truly understands the material. When teaching I would usually explain a section of material as best I could, then work through multiple examples that illustrate the material. This is then supplemented with exercises for the students to work through on their own.
