I returned to school part time in 1998 to work on a degree in physics. As a non-traditional student I was in my 30's, a single parent (three daughters), and working full time as an industrial sales rep. In 2005 I graduated with honors from New Mexico Tech with BS degrees in Physics/Astrophysics and Basic Sciences. Upon graduation I took a position as an instructor, grades 5-12, at a science camp in California for 2 semesters. For the past 2 1/2 years I have been employed as an Astronomer/Observer with M.I.T.'s Lincoln labs LINEAR program, searching for near Earth asteroids. I have wide experience and interests in both math and science. I've also taught undergraduate physics classes, substitute taught K-12, and tutored in a number of different situations.

A Little Bit About Me...

The biggest thing for me when teaching younger kids is patience. I never expect them to know something just because I do; they pick up on frustration which only makes them frustrated themselves. I believe that kids have the capacity to learn anything they please, and I do my best to transfer this belief to them. I never place myself on a pedestal with them, rather I make an effort to ensure that we see eye to eye. I respect them, and they offer me the same in return. For older students, I make sure that they don’t feel barred in by my (or the professors) opinion; rather I encourage them to formulate their own theories, so long as they can back them up. In all cases, I create a relationship with my students in which they can feel comfortable being honest and open with me. Positive reinforcement is the key.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a newly graduate from Northern Arizona University, I earned a BS in Biology with an emphasis in Zoology also 3 minors including: Mathematics, Spanish, and Chemistry. Over the past four years I have gained the understanding in various studies. Also I have written many research papers and laboratory reports in the sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Forestry. I have tutored High School students in math for AIMS and a high school student in Biology.
I enjoy working with children, young adults, and adults. Teaching others in any way is beneficial for them and in the long run for me. I am a friendly and patient person that cares about the education of others and myself. Learning can be difficult at times and a tutor or teacher might be needed. A Little Bit About Me...

I love to listen to what kids have to say. My teaching style is to ask a lot of questions in the attempt to get the kids to give the answers back to me. I think that it is more powerful for kids to come up with the answers themselves than to regurgitate what I have told them. I try to ask leading questions and get kids interested in the subjects that they are being taught, using teachable moments to play off of things that they are already excited about. I think that patience and giving them choices and opportunities to teach help empower children and give them a drive to learn.
I grew up as a member of CampFire boys and girls, now CampFire USA, and have been attending and working at their summer camps for the last 18 years of my life. I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system. So, I decided to move to a very rural location on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. There I spent the next four years as a special education teacher. I taught students with Emotional Disorders, and resoruce level classes in English and math with students with specific learning disabilities.
