I have enjoyed substitute teaching since 1991; it was a part- time occupation that worked well as I re-entered the college scene in order to advance my AA degree to a BA in Political Science. Life and destiny urged me to earn a teacher's certification in Texas, where I later worked as an ESL 4th-5th grade teacher in the Waco (Texas) Independent School District for three years. As a teacher in Ukraine, I was not there to replace the normal history and literature teachers. Instead, I supplemented their lessons and focused on developing critical thinking skills and stressed one on one interactions with the students. With history, the real teaching comes not in the memorization of facts, but in gaining an understanding of context, critical thinking, and the ability to approach the subject with a degree of relativity. I believe that the best learning comes from creating an atmosphere of friendliness and mutual respect between student and tutor. I was able to establish this relationship with my students in Ukraine.

I am very patient and reassuring to students and wait for them to get the answer on their own when tutoring mathematics. I show them how to do it first, then let them try, and then re-explain.
