I believe the best way for students to learn is by doing and discovering the material hands on as oppose to being lectured to. I like to instruct demonstrate the learning material to my students intially, but after that i prefer to have my students try the material themselves so they can see and understand what aspects of the material they dont understand. That helps me pinpoint what i need to focus on as far as helping them with a particular area of miscomprehension. I strongly believe in learning by doing instead of learning by seeing. As a student I enjoyed most the teachers who facilitated learning. Teachers who lead students on a road of discovery as they learned, who taught me how to think and not what to think. I model my teaching after the same style I enjoyed as a student. Helping a student discover for themselves the material not only educates them but fosters a passion for the subject at hand. If I had to put a label on my teaching style, I would call it interactive. I believe children learn best if they are actively involved in the learning process. Using materials and techniques that appeal to all of your child's senses is not only a more enjoyable way to teach, but a more effective way to learn. While it is important to have stated goals and levels of achievement, feedback from your child is truly important to me.
For over 15 years I've taught children from kindergarten through eighth grade in various settings.
