Turning your weakness into your strength

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"

I begin by observing the person. In which areas are they confident and strong? In which areas are they fearful and using avoidance? I then find a bridge from their place of confidence to their place of fear and coax them across until they are happily skipping across. This may take some time, but I believe in quality over quantity when it comes to completed work. I want to leave the person with the ability to complete it well and on their own the next time. Speed can be developed after mastery.

I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.
I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). If a student does have a mental model then I will test its accuracy using the standard procedures approved and or recommended by the institution of enrollment. Further encounters are then simply for reinforcement until the student is confident.
