My belief system says that ALL students need to be set up for success, as success breeds success. Throughout my teaching experience, I have found that students need a different model of learning from the 'one-size-fits-all' delivery system, which requires that all children learn the same thing at the same time regardless of what their individual needs are. The best way to describe my approach to teaching would be 'complex instruction', which falls under the umbrella of 'differentiated instruction'. Complex instruction is a strategy that was developed to address the various ranges of academic abilities while being culturally and linguistically heterogeneous. Equity of learning opportunity for all students is the objective of this teaching strategy.
I have been very passionate about teaching struggling students, particularly in the area of reading. From 2000-2004, I taught strugglin ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My love of reading and writing has led me to excel in 2 languages. An English major at Carleton College, I mastered the art of putting thoughts on paper to persuade, compare, or explicate; as well as how to read for meaning. Later at the Sorbonne in Paris, I transferred these talents to French. I have since taught and tutored reading, writing, and speaking in both languages in the U.S. and abroad.
My teaching style is active and enthusiastic. I show students clues and shortcuts in all sorts of subjects so that learning can be fun and even easy. I am tolerant and patient, while at the same time I request diligence and assiduousness. I revel in the success of my students, thanks to their efforts and hard work. I love to see students finally understand something they find challenging.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Language Arts teacher, I am well versed in many conceptual approaches to learning and mastering reading and writing. I have accompanied my teaching experience with a Master's Degree in English and Writing, as well as a Bachelor's Degree in communication. My teaching career began in New York City, but I am proud to have called Portland my home for the past three years, where I have been teaching English at a middle school in Beaverton.
Teaching comes as natural to me as parenting, the key is to set high but achievable goals, as well as firm expectations and boundaries. I have been regarded as a favorite teacher these past three years, and many former students come to visit me on their own time every week. I am patient, easy going, and considerate, but I do expect a level of rigor and effort that pushes my students to do their best. I come from the "Balanced Literacy" school of ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching for 11 years in deaf education, I have enjoyed seeing a growth in my students’ math academic progress in middle school and high school level. Most children who are deaf have a delay in language learning. A deaf child who uses sign language, English is not their first language. Math, reading, and writing are the three academic subjects that require special goals with appropriate lesson plans to enhance each student’s weakness in specific areas in mathematics. Math It is my responsibility to understand each student's weakness in math and I need to take them further in understanding this subject area.
Graduating from three different institutions, I have earned two master and a bachelor degrees – MS in Biology and MA in Special Education, and BA in Biology. Math and Science have my main strengths in earning the degrees. Being deaf since birth, I have learned a lot about deaf ... read more
