Science is a process by which we learn, not simply a body of knowledge to memorize. My approach to teaching biological and chemical sciences is two-pronged: to help students acquire the knowledge base necessary for understanding science, and to instill critical thinking skills through the scientific method of inquiry. I love to help students see the big picture of how various aspects of science fit together and to make connections between what they are learning and their own lives. It is these connections that spark interest and memory. A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout college, I consistently worked as a tutor or mentor, specifically with minority populations. Upon graduation, I joined Teach for America and taught high school English in rural North Carolina. Since my tenure in TFA, I have taught English to students in Mexico, substitue taught for 2 years at a Waldorf school in La Crosse, WI, and currently tutor and mentor students as I attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Cumulatively, including extended substitute teaching situations, I have taught all grade levels 1-12 in various subjects. I would describe my teaching style as ecclectic. By this I mean that I discern which style or strategy would best accomdodate the needs of the particular child, based on their learning style. I have formally tutored with Madison College on two occasions lasting a year. I was also Tutoring throughout my time at Edgewood on a drop in basis with any students that came to the math department and could not reach a professor. I have a BS in Mathematics and doing math at all levels is fun for me.
I enjoy helping students work through tough problems by allowing them to make mistakes and then rework the problem a couple of times the correct way. Since this is my area of expertise, I am able to come up with examples on the fly that will target the areas most troublesome to the student. Mathematics is a field that requires repetition but making that repetition as interesting as possible is a fun challenge. I do not wish to be a teacher by profession but I do enjoy helping individuals or small groups with science and mathematics.
