A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my experience comes from substitute teaching. I have been a certified local substitute teacher since September of 2010. I have taught everything from math and science to physical education and music while working as a local substitute teacher. I was able to provide additional service by mentoring individuals who were struggling with material in lessons and assignments. Other professional experience comes from working as a private voice tutor since May of 2010. I have coached many individuals both young and old through voice lessons to establish a core of healthy vocal routines and technique. Physics is one of my top subjects!

While I was going to college, I was employed by the University of Nebraska as a tutor for students in calculus and calculus based physics. I learned to teach students who learn by different methods and make the subjects relatable and understandable. I have a high degree of education as well as experience using the math and physics I learned in my job as a mechanical engineer.
I use strategic questions to help guide students to the right answer without giving the answer directly to them. I graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I spent a year as a Substitute Teacher in Lincoln, NE. I then took a year and a half break from teaching to recruit for a small college. I went back into teaching as a grade 7-12 mathematics teacher. I was responsible for the 7th grade through pre-calculus courses at Wheatland Public Schools in Madrid Nebraska. This school was then combined into Grant Public Schools. I am also a strong technical trainer in my current role and provide necessary computer and analytical training to all new associates at the current company I work for.
I teach to the student. I find exactly what their strengths are and incorporate it in some way to learn something new. Education is a set of building blocks and can only be as strong as the foundation.

Good teaching requires knowing both where a student is currently and where they need to go next. It is important to understand that each student may take a slightly different path in getting from "here" to "there." My goal is to focus on the strengths and find ways to overcome the weaknesses.
After teaching 2 years at a large public High School, I spent 5 years as a Research Chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. This experience gives me a practical understanding of research and science that I could not have achieved had I limited my career to teaching alone. For the past year I have been teaching at the LPS Science Focus Program where I have greatly diversified my experience. While in teachers college I decided to pursue a degree in Biochemistry to strengthen my content knowledge. Having a science degree in addition to a teaching degree is a definite advantage.

I graduated with a Biopsychology degree or otherwise known as Behavioral Neuroscience. This degree enabled me to study organic and inorganic chemistry, biology (immunology, biochemistry etc.), math (statistics, calculus) and 1 year of physics. My favorite class, however, was a psychology class called learning and behavior. That class has honed my teaching skills and I enjoyed using those skills while tutoring adolescents in a wide variety of subjects, high school teenagers prep for the ACT exam, working as a teaching assistant for organic chemistry and tutoring an autistic child.
