A Little Bit About Me...

Hello! My name is Payton and I am currently a student at Illinois State University. I am studying to get my bachelors in Special Education - Learning and Behavior Specialist. I am currently a junior and will be graduating in Spring of 2024. Once I graduate, I will be certified to teach k-12 grade Special Education. I currently have my Associate in Arts from College of DuPage as well. I have worked with children of all ages throughout my high school and college career. When studying at College of DuPage, I had many opportunities to observe and student teach within Middle School Special Education classrooms, specifically English. I loved it! When I'm home for the summer I am a head teacher at a daycare facility for an Elementary Summer STEAM camp. I am in charge of planning lessons and activities for my students. I enjoy teaching a great deal. I love children, and believe every child has the capacity to succeed. My job is not only to give children the content knowledge, but to build their self-esteem and help them realize their own potential. In my experience, students who lack self-esteem often perform poorly in school, even if they know the material. My job is to build their self image while giving them the skills they need to excel.
After graduating from college with a degree in English, I pursued a career in the corporate field. I did not find it satisfying and yearned to return to school to pursue a master's in education. I began substitute teaching in spring of 2007 and completed my student teaching in December 2007. I have been teaching English since I finished student teaching and have been a tutor at Sylvan for some time. I tutor all areas, from beginning to advanced reading and ma ... read more

My goal is to enhance the knowledge of children through the implementation of their best learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or tactile) and to motivate the students to pursue further learning and personal experience in the topic we are studying. I treat my clients with respect and ask for it in return. I am extremely patient with children who struggle with learning and adapt materials, as necessary, for the child/client to learn the most effectively. My observation skills are high in relation to determining students' learning styles, interests, frustration levels, motivation, and achievements.
I have been a Special Education Teacher since 1998 and have most enjoyed and excelled with students through teaching reading skills. I have exceptional skills in motivating students to learn how to read. I passed the Reading Teacher Certification Test in November and am wait ... read more
