Initially, I believe it is important to assess a student’s present levels. If I know at what level the student is functioning, I can then create a plan to improve the student’s skills. When I am working one-on-one with a student, I teach to the student’s strengths. I try to touch as many modalities as possible, making the concepts easier to understand and remember. I also believe it is important to build up the confidence of students by giving them opportunities for success. If students think they can be successful, learning difficult concepts becomes something that students are more comfortable trying.
